Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical, comfortable traction therapy for the relief of back and leg pain, or neck and arm pain. During the procedure, axial (Y-axis) traction is applied to the spine. By cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and proper positioning, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it. This allows a chance for protruding or herniated disc material to be pulled back within the disc, and stimulates an increase of blood supply, secondarily stimulating a healing response. The result is pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site. Per the American Chiropractic Association, decompression therapy can be used in treating several conditions, including low back pain associated with lumber disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, and radiculopathy. Clinical objectives of this therapy are relief of disabling pain and a return to normal function. Length of treatment varies partially depending on the patient's response to treatment.
