Why use ice on a new injury rather than heat? This is a question that is asked a lot in our office. Ice is used in the office during treatment to create a physiological change in the body.
When do I use ice?
Ice is the way to go any time you have a new injury. Ice helps the body by decreasing the inflammation and swelling that occurs with a new injury. Generally patients are instructed in the office to use ice becasue they have presented with a new or recently aggravated condition.
How do I use ice?
Use ice where and when it hurts: twenty minutes on and a minimum of two hours between uses. Use at least twice a day.
